On September 23rd 2016, forumZFD organised a seminar with representatives of youth organisations of several Lebanese political parties in cooperation with the Center for Applied Research in Education (CARE), the Lebanese Association for History (LAH), Saint Joseph University (USJ) and German expert Dr. Mara Albrecht (University of Erfurt, Germany). The overall objective of the seminar was to open a constructive dialogue about the organisation's particular role in memorialisation and learning about the past with a specific emphasis on education.
On the 29th of April 2017, the former and presently closed Barbir hospital in Beirut came to life again: Students from twelve schools from various parts of the country presented information, films and artworks on various commemoration sites and important events of the Lebanese Civil War. Visitors could see, among others, a reproduction of the"Hope for Peace monument" in Yarzeh where tanks have been put on top of each other to form a memorial, a room with empty beds representing people gone missing in the war, or reproductions of old newspaper articles about Musa Sadr and other religious leaders in Lebanon going on hunger strike in protest against the Civil War.
In this project, forumZFD and the Lebanese Association for History (LAH) support teachers in exploring commemoration sites with their students. A commemoration site is any public site that is linked to the history of the Civil War like a statute or a building left damaged by the war. Given that different people in Lebanon have very different narratives about the Lebanese Civil War, there is no agreed and official curriculum for teaching about this period in Lebanese schools. The pilot project on sites of commemoration provides teachers with methods of exploring the history of the Civil War together with their students. By doing research about specific commemoration sites students are able to better understand the Lebanese past and are encouraged to critically reflect upon different narratives of the past.
The handbook "The Memory of the War" collects narratives from different sides of the conflict alongside other material about the Civil War such as interviews, newspaper articles, pictures and exercises. The material is presented in twelve thematic chapters, each designed to be easily integrated in history lessons at school or to be used as workshop guidelines in youth clubs and NGO work. The handbook "The Memory of the War" collects narratives from different sides of the conflict alongside other material about the Civil War such as interviews, newspaper articles, pictures and exercises. The research report "The Power of Remembrance: Political Parties, Memory and Learning about the Past in Lebanon" by Dr. Mara Albrecht (University of Erfurt, Germany) and Dr. Basel Akar (Notre Dame University-Louaiye, Center for Applied Research and Education) investigates the use of memory by political parties in Lebanon in the political and educational domains. The study was carried out in collaboration with forumZFD Lebanon and conducted in the framework of the programm area "Dealing with the Past".
As part of the Memory of War Project ,ForumZFD worked in partnership with the Lebanese Center for Civic Education (LCCE) and Step Away. The collaboration produced the documentary “When the War Sunk In” portraying the personal experiences of 6 people who have lived through the civil war and a teaching manual focusing on the war in Lebanon.
The overall objective of the project “Memories of the War” is to provide a safe place to discuss the civil war and other violent events. forumZFD has been providing training courses to teachers and practitioners from NGOs and INGOs, which include innovative learning and teaching methods promoting critical thinking and interpretations of past and present violence. The project aims at increasing mutual acceptance of one’s and others’ narratives. So far, 40 public school teachers, 65 private school teachers, 15 education practionairs, more than 65 persons working with NGOs and INGOs, and other interested university professors and activists have attended forumZFD’s trainings.
Former fighters shared their stories with Playback theater that then reenacted them on stage. (This sentence is not very clear, I don't understand what this play was about)
